The news director is responsible for developing local news stories for the radio newscasts Monday-Friday and for our website.

A typical day for an MMJ at KTTC starts with an editorial meeting. Here, stories are discussed, and ideas shared that help determine what our lead story will be. MMJs pitch content through Microsoft Teams the day before and come ready to turn stories, having made calls and prearranged interviews in case their pitch is given the greenlight.

After the editorial, MMJs get to work, confirming interviews, researching facts and background information, and getting out the door to get fresh video. Time management is a critical skill for MMJs, as they are responsible for shooting their own video and interviews, writing and editing their stories for broadcast, and posting their stories to the station website and social media platforms.

The day ends with an MMJ making their story pitch for the next day, having already made calls and researched the topic ahead of time.

Production Producer

WUCW is seeking a Production Producer. The person will be responsible for conceptualizing, creating, shooting and editing cutting edge commercials for our clients. They also will help the Creative Services Manager with promotional productions and station sponsored events when needed including outside media buys (radio, Facebook, billboards, ect.) and assisting management of on-air traffic for promotional content.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for studio production, audio and technical directing of live and pre-recorded television shows and promos.

Job Responsibilities

Studio

  • Operate television camera, teleprompter, and audio equipment at a satisfactory level and with confidence during live and taped shows.
  • Respond to all cues given over headset and in person during shows. Must react quickly and efficiently to cues and other directions.  Act as a critical communication link between director and talent.  Reports any concerns.
  • Take care of all aspects of studio maintenance, which includes cleaning, repair, set up, tear down and storage of studio and related items; routine inspection, monitoring performance and basic trouble shooting of equipment. Maintain studio lighting and other studio supplies. Follow proper protocol for notifying other personnel when items are needed or there are problems or failures. Studio Cleanliness includes Studio A, Studio C, Twin Cities Live studio, the production area and storage areas.
  • On a daily basis provides assistance to and provides input about the show.
  • Complete knowledge of the lighting systems in all studios

Audio

  • Under the direction of the director, correctly/accurately switch all audio going through the audio booth. Work ahead to insure that all elements needed during your shift are ready to go.
  • Control the quality of the audio going through the audio booth. Insure that all elements of the audio are at the proper level. Insure that the balance between microphones, music, and videotape sources are mixed and at a proper relationship with each other.
  • Ready at the audio position during assigned shift to handle any audio needs, especially during times of breaking news.
  • Help with coverage of special events and with the coverage of audio during vacations and other times when no audio operator is available.
  • Insure that all paperwork is filled out properly. Accurately complete the logging of all musical elements to insure proper credits under the music license rules. Complete any logs, scripts or other paperwork that is required.

Technical Directing

  • Technical direct a creative and technically clean productions within format guidelines.
  • Protect the integrity of the format.
  • Make suggestions for improvement.
  • Be responsible for all elements of a show. Set a positive attitude and example. Solve problems at the source. Challenge employees to improve. Respond appropriately to others.

Other

  • Assist with training or assistance to new staff members.

    • Correctly operates all technical equipment used in Master Control.
    • Communicate to maintenance/engineering staff any technical problems with equipment.
  • Responsible for the acquisition and distribution (A&D) of programs and commercials for air. Operate with proficiency all A&D equipment including, but not limited to, Flip Factory for timing. 
    • Tune and record satellite feeds for news and operations. Uplinks to satellites.
    • Operate routers, microwave and satellite receiving equipment. Tune in all live shots for newscasts via LiveU, microwave, and satellite receivers. 
    • Operate computers to receive FTP material from HBI properties as well as from the public as necessary.
    • Ingest and record programs and commercial content from DG Pathfire, Pitch Blue, EZ Spot, Extreme Reach, Local FTP, satellite and beta into the server. Time programs for air.
    • Operate with proficiency all video equipment.
    • Records air checks. Dubs air checks to DVD.
  • News Operations
    • Establish live shot from the field via LiveU, ENG, or SNG.
    • Assign IFB to talent and inform control room and news room of their location.
    • Uplink news stories to satellite.
    • Proficient knowledge of ENPS.
  • Prepare for unexpected changes and problems with network and local programming. Be ready to respond appropriately when necessary.
  • Share information with the next shift on technical difficulties or unresolved issues.
  • On a daily basis, maintain and complete with accuracy all logs and other records related to Master Control.
  • Work ahead to insure all necessary materials are available for current and next shift. Insure sufficient time so that they are corrected well before air time.
  • Edit playlists through conclusion of shift and at a minimum of eight hours into the next shift.
  • Serve as communication link between Assignment Desk, Producers and Field Crews, keeping everyone informed as to changes that occur in the show rundowns or problems encountered in the field.
  • Seek out ways to expand current skills and abilities; take initiative to learn new tasks, duties, technology and equipment. Offer ideas that would enhance or improve the way work is done. 
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with others. Foster a spirit of cooperation and helpfulness with co-workers in news, operations, traffic and promotions as well as management. Act in a professional manner while at work.
