Required Qualifications

  • With news management, constructs and plans a daily newscast by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscast, using criteria established by management. Makes decisions about stories to be included, how long they should be, the form of the story (i.e. voice-over, live remote, reporter package, etc.), and in what order they should run. Writes and rewrites stories as needed. Plans for contingencies.
  • Makes sure all aspects of the newscast are complete before the newscast airs. Plans ahead and meets deadlines so newscasts can run smoothly for all involved. Important aspects include completed scripts, graphic information, video lists, all necessary script times, and key information. Enters information for story choices and storied into the newsroom computer system. Notifies proper people of any changes or special situations that may come up in a timely manner (i.e. breaking news, live shots)
  • Writes and posts stories to website and other media platforms. Posts to social media. Frequently updates online stories.
  • Shoots and edits videotape for broadcast as needed.
  • Communicates frequently throughout the shift and works collaboratively with others in the newsroom including reporters, anchors, photographers, assignment desk staff, creative services, and other producers about the newscast and any changes being made. Relays story and newscast instructions and information throughout the day via telephones, e-mails, faxes, or other ways available. Motivates staff before and during newscast.
  • Responds and works well in a crisis and during breaking news. Handles last minute and unexpected changes. Communicates quickly and clearly to necessary staff and talent.
  • Writes clear, accurate, and interesting stories. Ensures that any visuals shown are relevant, appropriate, and impactful. Breaks down complicated and involved stories so that they are easy to understand.
  • Makes decisions about the timing of a live newscast as it is being broadcast. The Producer watches the live newscast from a designated control room. Communicates changes to director, technical director, audio operator, graphics person, studio operators (inc. camera operators, floor director, teleprompter operator), videotape operator, master control operator, and anchors. Decisions about the live newscast are immediate and communications must be relayed clearly and timely.
  • Completes post-show paperwork and tasks including the technical trouble report and archiving.
  • Attends editorial and strategic meetings. Comes prepared to meetings and interacts professionally with others. Contributes story ideas on a daily basis.
  • Is knowledgeable of local, national, and world events. Has a handle on what is going on in the community.
  • Consult with the news director, and/or assistant news director on difficult editorial issues.
  • May travel but only on a very limited basis and in special circumstances.

  • Constantly monitor and maintain on air-accuracy of all programs and commercials of all television stations and other related transmitters.

    • Correctly operates all technical equipment used in Master Control.
    • Communicate to maintenance/engineering staff any technical problems with equipment.

    • Operate computers to receive FTP material from HBI properties as well as from the public as necessary.
    • Ingest and record programs and commercial content from DG Pathfire, Pitch Blue, EZ Spot, Extreme Reach, Local FTP, satellite and beta into the server. Time programs for air.
    • Operate with proficiency all video equipment.
    • Records air checks. Dubs air checks to DVD.
  • News Operations
    • Establish live shot from the field via LiveU, ENG, or SNG.
    • Assign IFB to talent and inform control room and news room of their location.
    • Uplink news stories to satellite.
    • Proficient knowledge of ENPS.
  • Prepare for unexpected changes and problems with network and local programming. Be ready to respond appropriately when necessary.
  • Share information with the next shift on technical difficulties or unresolved issues.
  • On a daily basis, maintain and complete with accuracy all logs and other records related to Master Control.
  • Work ahead to insure all necessary materials are available for current and next shift. Insure sufficient time so that they are corrected well before air time.
  • Edit playlists through conclusion of shift and at a minimum of eight hours into the next shift.
  • Serve as communication link between Assignment Desk, Producers and Field Crews, keeping everyone informed as to changes that occur in the show rundowns or problems encountered in the field.
  • Seek out ways to expand current skills and abilities; take initiative to learn new tasks, duties, technology and equipment. Offer ideas that would enhance or improve the way work is done.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for the daily preparation of the commercial/program log including log editing and commercial spot placement so as to maximize station revenue and minimize loss, and performing continuity duties.

Job Responsibilities

  • On a daily basis, place spots on logs by maximizing commercial inventory following philosophies set forth by General Manager.
  • Review and audit day parts as far into the future as possible.
  • Responsible for daily preparation of the program/commercial log using prescribed broadcast software.
  • Edit log so that it is error free.
  • Ensure each commercial spot placed does not have a product conflict, is airing within the correct time period and order/advertiser separation guidelines are followed.
  • Ensure program information is accurate and specific conditions are met.
  • Communicate inventory problems to the Controller and General Manager.
  • Create programming formats in a timely manner and enter new program information into system based on program orders received.
  • Schedule formats onto each station's log.
  • Follow processes to alert account managers that advertisers may need to be moved due to program changes, change orders when spots meet new program criteria, or pre-empt spots when they do not.
  • Review master programming schedule and compares with logs.
  • Check the log formats with automation formats for breaks, barters, segments and timings when necessary. Ensure that logs are 100% accurate and contain specific information including sponsorships, promos, tied events and IDs.
  • Assign episode numbers to programming on the logs from the schedule provided from the Programming Department.
  • Maintain inventory tree including maintaining existing inventory codes, making new codes and adding inventory code comments so managers and account managers know what programming is available to sell, sellout levels and rates for each program.
  • Communicate any problems to Controller.
  • Perform continuity duties, including processing production orders and coordinating production with the Programming Department.
  • Provide reports to the Sales Staff. Download and enter copy instructions for barter contracts. Attend meetings as required or requested.
  • Assist and perform work for other Sales Assistants as needed, including covering breaks. Ensure adequate administrative support at all times during the workday.

•    Strong commitment to quality and attention to detail
•    Currently working similar positions in a broadcast studio with a minimum of 4 years of news production
