The Technical Director is responsible for the direction of live newscasts and any preparation involved for the newscast.

Job Responsibilities

  • Technical direct newscasts using a VizRT Vectar (NewTek TriCaster) via a NewsMaker NewsCaster production automation system (tech directing, graphics, cameras and audio are all automated and executed by the Technical Director).

Shoot video and edit news stories for newscasts on a daily basis.

Job Responsibilities

  • Shoot steady, sequenced video with good, clean audio for news, weather and sports for daily newscasts, specials and station websites as well as social media under tight deadlines. Edit in camera for sequences. Uses movement off the shoulder to show viewers what is seen in the field and a tripod or steady bag for steady shots. Shoots wide, medium and tight shots with a variety of subjects for the purpose of telling the story through pictures.
  • While shooting, get clean audio and sound. Gather great natural sound while in the field. Ensure good lighting, making sure the shot is bright and not dark.
  • Edit video and audio satisfactorily for news stories such as vos, vo/sots, setups and reporter PKGs using difference techniques and different editing machines (including non-linear editing) under tight deadlines and in stressful situations while completing on time. Editing is done in house. Learn and perform competently multi-layering and special effects such as witness protection, highlighting video clips, color correction, and picture in picture effects. Aspire to editing excellence to raise the level of storytelling.
  • Learn and operate effectively and satisfactorily new technology and equipment including but not limited to FCP, Panasonic P2 300 camera, servers, editing equipment.
  • Present live on television scripted and unscripted news reports; may present live stories from the scene of the news, the newsroom and/or studio or may tape stories for later broadcast.
  • Enterprise and develop stories for broadcast daily. Research and gather content for story. Write clear, accurate and interesting stories.
  • Break down complicated and involved stories so that they are easy to understand. Ensure that any visuals shown are relevant, appropriate and impactful. Maintain standards of accuracy and fairness in news coverage.
  • Travel to the scene of a news story to gather and compile the information into the proper form for broadcast.
  • Complete assignments according to established deadlines.
  • Maintain extensive community contacts and awareness of local and national current events.
  • Make promotional and community appearances as required.
  • Maintain appropriate and strict standards with regard to wardrobe, hair, cosmetics, and other areas of grooming.
  • Write and post stories to website and other digital media platforms. Frequently update online stories.

  • Acts as project manager on productions, monitoring due dates, schedules, staff assignments, and resource allocation.
  • Identify areas for improvement in production processes and implement strategies to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Prepares and monitors budgets, contracts, and project development.
  • Works with the Director of Engineering to identify and develop workflows and technologies necessary for the success of the production department.
  • Provides editorial leadership and direction, in support of the goals of the department as set by the Senior Director of Content, ensuring that content is on-brand, diverse and inclusive of all audiences, consistent in quality, highest journalistic integrity and standards, and optimized for viewer experience.
  • Represents PBS North as a responsible, informed ambassador locally and nationally.
  • Continually engaged in self-education and professionally provided training.
  • Other duties as assigned germane to this role.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree from an accredited university in multi-media, communications, journalism, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a non-profit or for-profit media setting with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Studio and/or field production experience, oversight of productions from conception to reality.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Premiere.
  • Experience on camera preferred but not required.
  • Editing, Shooting experience preferred but not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Availability beyond regular daytime work hours via phone, e-mail, and in-person.
  • Ability to drive.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Senior Director of Content Development & Platform Distribution

POSITION SUMMARY:

PBS North seeks an innovative, dynamic, and visionary leader for the role of Senior Director of Content Development & Platform Distribution. This pivotal position will steer the creative and strategic direction of PBS North’s content across all platforms—television, radio, digital, and emerging media—ensuring a cohesive, impactful, and engaging audience experience. The ideal

candidate will possess a robust understanding of omniplatform content strategies, an aptitude for cross-functional leadership, and a passion for community-focused storytelling. This role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and will oversee the Production Manager, Radio Station Manager, and Education Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Strategic Leadership and Vision:

    • Develop and implement a progressive-thinking content strategy that leverages PBS North's multi-platform capabilities, including television, radio, digital, and social media.
    • Align content initiatives with organizational goals, fostering growth in audience engagement and reach.
    • Serve as a key member of the executive management team, contributing to the strategic direction of PBS North.
  • Content Creation and Program Development:
    • Oversee the production and delivery of high-quality, diverse, and inclusive content that resonates with local, regional, and national audiences.
    • Ensure content maintains the highest standards of journalistic integrity and editorial excellence.
    • Lead the development of innovative programming and educational initiatives that address community interests and issues.
  • Cross-Functional Team Management:
    • Supervise and mentor direct reports, including the Production Manager, Radio Station Manager, and Education Manager, fostering a collaborative and high- performing team culture.
    • Coordinate and manage cross-functional teams to ensure seamless program delivery and content creation across all platforms.

  • Audience Development and Engagement
    • Utilize audience data and analytics to inform content strategy and programming decisions.
    • Implement effective audience engagement strategies to increase viewership, listenership, and digital interaction.

  • Budget and Project Management
    • Prepare and manage budgets for content development projects, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with organizational priorities.
    • Oversee contracts and project timelines, ensuring timely and successful execution of initiatives.

  • Community and Stakeholder Relations:
    • Act as an ambassador for PBS North, cultivating relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, and partners.
    • Represent PBS North at local and national events, promoting its mission and values.

  • Continuous Improvement and Professional Development:
    • Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies, integrating new insights into content strategies.
    • Encourage ongoing professional development within the team to maintain a competitive edge in the media landscape.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
