Candidates must be able to accurately forecast weather conditions relating to all four Midwestern seasons, while producing and presenting accurate weather reports.  Our morning newscast runs from 4:30 a.m.-7:00 a.m. on weekdays.  Need someone who enjoys getting up early to provide the latest weather information in a personable way.  Frequent live shots and getting out into the field for reporting duties (especially for weather coverage) are part of the job.

The ideal candidate is someone who can:

  • Analyze weather data and prepare an accurate forecast
  • Use WSI graphic systems to create content supporting the forecast
  • Cover severe and breaking weather situations across all platforms
  • Post weather content to station website, social media accounts, and apps
  • Will be flexible and is willing to cover severe weather or fill-in for other weather team members

Oversees the daily news gathering, planning and reporting for television and digital platforms. Manages the central news desk and staff. Reports directly to and works closely with News Director, along with other newsroom managers on implementation of daily news coverage plans.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Oversee the content desk comprised of content editors who focus on logistics and digital publishing
  • Lead a team of executive producers to consistently ensure newscasts focus on breaking news and severe weather coverage
  • Actively monitor an array of social media, websites, public safety scanners, phones and emails for breaking news, significant events, and interesting community stories
  • Make quick decisions during breaking news by notifying the newsroom, assigning crews, and confirming information while communicating with the entire newsroom. Being accurate while aggressive is a must
  • Be a logistics specialist in coordinating multiple field crews, multiple ways to broadcast in remote live locations while maintaining communication with the newsroom
  • Develop and maintain contacts with first responders, local government officials and community organizations to keep up with current events
  • Generate unique, enterprise story ideas. Work with producers and reporters to develop complete stories, find contacts, and track follow ups
  • Being knowledgeable about local, national, and global events. Have a good understanding of government and legal procedure.
  • Utilize a variety of technologies for video capture & edit, file transfer, social communication, live traffic cameras, remote interviews
  • Communicates frequently throughout the day regarding changes with reporters, story follows, crew assignments, etc.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience directing live newscasts in an automated environment (preferred).
  • Possess knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, switching, control and operations of television systems.
  • Must be flexible and able to deal with unexpected show changes calmly.
  • Graphic design experience preferred. Knowledge of Adobe After Effects preferred.
  • Experience with studio lighting and using industry standard lighting techniques.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks

Job Overview

The Technical Director is responsible for the direction of live newscasts and any preparation involved for the newscast.

Job Responsibilities

  • Technical direct newscasts using a VizRT Vectar (NewTek TriCaster) via a NewsMaker NewsCaster production automation system (tech directing, graphics, cameras and audio are all automated and executed by the Technical Director).
  • Program production automation system to facilitate the changing of newscast formatting over time.
  • Design graphics for newscasts and adhere to design standards set forth by the Brand Manager.
  • Along with producer, establish pace of newscasts and sequences of segments according to time requirements and accessibility.
  • Ensures programs run smoothly during live broadcasts.
  • Handle last-minute and unexpected changes in a professional, poised manner during live broadcasts. Be able to communicate calmly, quickly and clearly to all involved as needed.
  • Maintain adequate studio lighting levels and work with Brand Manager to light new sets or make changes to existing sets.
  • Keep the studio functional and clean.
  • Assist the News Department when needed. This may include video editing, shooting or updating digital content.
  • Report to work on time and work established schedule/hours, which includes occasional weekend shifts.
